Nick Chen, CFA
Before joining Hydra, Nick was the head trader at Polar Securities, a Canadian multi-strategy hedge fund manager. He was also a co-manager of a resource focused micro-cap strategy within the fund.
Prior to his ten years at Polar, Nick spent three years at Trimark (now Invesco) in accounting and programming roles. Nick earned his CFA designation in 2006.
Brian has been involved in the investment business for over 25 years. He was a co-founder and Managing Director at Wellington West Capital Markets.
Prior to this, Brian was head of institutional equity trading at Scotia Capital and Orion Securities.
Jim is an MBA graduate from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Hydra, Jim was Managing Director – Head of Institutional Sales and co-founder of Wellington West Capital Markets.
Prior to WWCM, Jim worked in corporate banking at Bank of Nova Scotia, institutional fixed income sales and trading at Nesbitt Burns, and institutional equity sales at Research Capital, Goepel McDermid and RBC Capital Markets.
Prior to Hydra, Gerry was a partner at Visum Capital Inc. Previously, EVP, Managing Director and Head of Institutional Equity at National Bank Financial, similarly at HSBC Canada and Gordon Capital Inc.
Gerry has also held senior positions at RBC Capital Markets and Merrill Lynch Canada.
Steve has over three decades experience on both the sell side and the buy side of the investment business. He was Head of Research and Investment Strategist/Special Situations Analyst at GMP Securities/Stifel Canada (2012-2020), and Head of Research in Canada and North American Equity Strategist at Macquarie Securities/Orion Securities (2006-2012).
Previously, he was Managing Director/Portfolio Manager at Senecal Investment Counsel (1991-2006), a boutique investment counsellor managing equity, balanced, and fixed income funds for Canadian institutional clients. In 2002, he led a successful MBO of the firm, one of nine financial services M&A transactions he participated in over 25 years.
Parm has been in the investment business for over 20 years. Prior to joining Hydra Capital Partners Parm was the President of Flatiron Capital Management Partners which he co-founded in 2004…
He was a portfolio manager of various funds using a long-short strategy, with assets under management of up to $500 million for 9 years, until the firm was sold in 2012. Before this he served as a Vice President of Front Street Capital, which he was involved in founding, and where he co-managed portfolios for various hedge funds. Parm has a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering from the University of Toronto, is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Brian has been in the investment business for over 25 years and has been involved in all aspects of the capital markets, with particular emphasis on small and mid capitalization companies.
Prior to joining Hydra Capital Partners he was a partner at Cormark Securities and also a Managing Director at Raymond James Securities and Gordon Capital. Brian has a business degree from McGill University.
Nirvaan completed his formal education at the Schulich school of Business in Investment Finance and, has been a financial industry professional for over 20 years holding positions in research, equity trading and risk management.
Most recently, Nirvaan was a co-founder and Managing Director of Wellington West Capital Markets (WWCM), where he focused on both the domestic and international energy sectors. WWCM was subsequently sold to a major Canadian financial institution.
Michelle has been in the investment business for over 20 years. Prior to joining Hydra Capital Partners Michelle was the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Flatiron Capital Management Partners which she co-founded in 2004…
In this capacity she was responsible for all aspects of the business for 9 years until the firm was sold in 2012. Prior to forming Flatiron she was an institutional equity trader specializing in risk arbitrage for various Canadian bank-owned brokerages houses. Prior to this she spent several years in senior accounting and management roles for various Canadian brokerage houses. Michelle has an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from McMaster University and is a Chartered Accountant.
Frank has over three decades of experience in the Canadian capital markets, most recently as a portfolio manager at Seven Seas Capital Management.
Prior to that, Frank was a Managing Director, Head of Proprietary Trading and Head of Institutional Sales at UBS Securities Canada.
Malcolm holds a MSc in Geology from the University of Toronto and has 20 years of experience spanning the resource and investment industries.
Malcolm started his career as a geoscientist at PanCanadian Petroleum (now EnCana) before transitioning into the investment industry as an international energy research analyst at Wellington West Capital Markets. Before joining Hydra, Malcolm was a Vice President at K2 & Associates Investment Management where he specialized in the energy and materials sectors.
Bill worked as an investment banker for over 20 years. Most recently he was Head of Global Mining & Metals at National Bank Financial Markets for 5 years following their acquisition of Wellington West Capital Markets where he was Head of Investment Banking.
Bill has an MBA from the University of Western Ontario (Ivey). He also has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Civil Engineering) from the University of British Columbia and worked as a civil engineer for 6 years on major infrastructure projects in the UK, Spain and Hong Kong. Bill is a director of Wesdome Gold Mines and Copper Mountain Mining Corporation.
